“Community Radio in the Age of Artificial Intelligence” – Two-Day Conference Held in Ooty
In the context of rapid technological advancements brought by Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the media sector, a two-day conference titled “Community Radio in the Age of AI” was held on March 14 and 15, 2026, at Vinayaga Inn by Poppys Hotel, Udhagamandalam (Ooty).
The main objective of the conference was to discuss the growth of community radio, its contribution to society, and the new transformations that artificial intelligence technologies are bringing to radio broadcasting. The event was also organized to guide organizations, social groups, NGOs, educational institutions, and media enthusiasts who are interested in establishing community radio stations.
During the conference, the book “Community Radio Handbook” authored by Dr. Thanga Jaisakthivel, Professor from the Department of Journalism and Communication, University of Madras, was officially released. The book has been published by Airmedia Broadcast Solutions Private Limited. It serves as an important guide for those who wish to start a community radio station as well as for those already operating one. The book also includes compiled information about community radio stations functioning across Tamil Nadu.
In his address, Dr. Thanga Jaisakthivel emphasized the need to introduce a system in India similar to the Restricted Service License (RSL) model practiced in the United Kingdom. Under such a system, short-term licenses could be issued, allowing special community radio services like “Pongal FM” or “Ramadan FM” to operate for a limited period such as one month. He explained that such initiatives could create new employment opportunities and encourage the growth of radio broadcasting.
The conference organizer Mr. P. Vijayakumar, in his speech, highlighted that the Central Government currently provides a grant of up to ₹12.5 lakhs for establishing community radio stations. He also explained the practical steps involved in applying for the grant and starting a community radio station with ease. Guidance was also provided for NGOs, schools, and colleges interested in launching their own community radio stations.
The conference further provided detailed explanations on the procedures for obtaining community radio licenses, technical infrastructure, administrative processes, and financial management. Discussions were also held on new possibilities such as improving content production using artificial intelligence technologies and creating 24-hour automated radio broadcasting systems.
Representatives from Rathinam College (Rathinavani FM) and Kalasalingam University (Kalasalingam FM) shared their experiences in operating community radio stations. They also explained the technical support being provided by Airmedia.
During the second day session, discussions were held regarding the preparations for an International Media Conference planned for December. Dr. C. Praveenkumar from Ramakrishna College and Dr. Pragathi, Professor from the Department of Journalism at DG Vaishnav College, Chennai, shared their views during the session.
The conference served as an important platform where media experts, academicians, social leaders, and policy makers came together to discuss the future of community radio. Through initiatives like this, Airmedia continues to act as a strong bridge between communities and community radio while contributing to social development.
