வானொலியின் தந்தை மற்றும் நோபல் பரிசு பெற்ற குக்லீல்மோ மார்க்கோனி 1874ம் ஆண்டு ஏப்ரல் 25ம் தேதி இத்தாலியின் பொலொனா நகரில் பிறந்தார். இவருக்கு இயற்பியலில் குறிப்பாக மின்சாரவியலில் ஆர்வம் பிறந்து, கம்பி இல்லாமல் ஒலி அலைகளை அனுப்புவது பற்றிய ஆராய்ச்சியில் ஈடுபட்டார். ஒரே ஆண்டில் மின்காந்த அலைகள் மூலமாக சிக்னல்களை அனுப்பிக் காட்டினார். 1895ம் ஆண்டு திசை திரும்பும் மின்கம்பம் (Directional Antenna) என்ற கருவி மூலம் ஒன்றரை கி.மீ. தூரத்திற்கு செய்தியை அனுப்பினார். 1897ம் ஆண்டு இங்கிலாந்தில் மார்க்கோனி நிறுவனம் தொடங்கப்பட்டது. ஸ்டீசர் என்ற இடத்தில் வானொலி நிலையத்தை உருவாக்கினார். 1901ம் ஆண்டு 2100 கி.மீ. தொலைவுக்கு செய்தியை அனுப்பினார். இதன்மூலம் உலகப்புகழ் பெற்றார். மார்க்கோனியின் வானொலி ஆய்வுகள் அங்கீகரிக்கப்பட்டு, கார்ல் பெர்டினாண்ட் பிரவுன் என்ற ஜெர்மானியருடன் இணைந்து மார்க்கோனிக்கும் நோபல் பரிசு வழங்கப்பட்டது. மக்களுக்கு மிக நெருங்கிய பொழுதுபோக்கு சாதனத்தை வழங்கிய மார்க்கோனி தனது 63வது வயதில் (1937) மறைந்தார்.
